A Theft Of The Heart

She counts
all the men
that have
come and gone
rise and fall
tiny notches
on her wall
and they will
never know
what piece of her
they have taken
with them
and it's not
anything transparent
or cliche
words that rhyme
or step away
it's the subtleties
in her voice
the way she
touched their brow
and as they
shuffle down the street
straightening their tie
and belt buckle
they will never know
the wonder
that she felt
at their absence
the after thought
or the expression
of sorrow
for the lacking
in how we have
raised our boys
and to her amazement
there is no hostility
only remorse
for what they steal
and never borrow
...a theft of the heart

Dancing Dreams

Walk softly past my window
Early morning light stretches
Across a dimly lit sky
With gentle hands
Reaching for a heart
That yawns
While the mind
Holds onto dreams
In shimmering shades
Of lavender and blue
Pleading, “…don’t wake me, not yet, not yet…”
Tender kisses like feathers fall
From the lips of lovers
Drift upon a delicate backdrop
Of rainbows and the sweet scent of freshly picked flowers
Dancing like Fred and Ginger
Two as one synchronized
In a life filled with promises
Of forever and always…

Day Break Ride

...so often
in the solitude
of when all
is said and done
after the passions
have been met
when the dead
of night
begins its decline
and the morning light
starts to rise
there is an emptiness
that comes
over me
taking me
by surprise
in the before
day-break ride
heading home
when angst
begins to question
...is this intimacy
or just the way
we find
a few hours
of separation
from our day
to day grind
to keep the demons
at bay
- and maybe
I've come
to a split
in the road
or to a path
I have never
chosen...
reflective logic
vacancy opens
a sense of
pure weakness
nothing stronger
leaving me
feeling empty
and wishing
maybe I should
have stayed
a little longer...
