Revolution

It's raining down collective societal conscience
a shift, slap and pat down of fear based rhetoric
something so sinister it retracts common morality;
lean to the right and hear a reptilian hiss...
dissipating truth from fiction
power is an addiction - if we slither in groups

It's something we can find in our history books
flashback resource of tales and stories told
and as the sisterhood and brotherhood of humanity
are pushed to its limits, hands and tongues bound
a night like this is more dangerous than most
while we flip through the networks and watch
- media spins as we begin to crumble from the top...

But nothing else will set us free
nothing else will let us float around
without hitting the four corners
and there is something soothing
about the tapping sound of water
as it taps, taps, taps on a tin can
with the ambiance of tar and paper
peeling back the layered years

It is the soothing sound of a revolution

...hearing the water running down
outside on a window frame; window pane - shutters
reaching out, coiling within inciting violence
running like the devil is chasing angels
shatter proof - a ghastly scene feathers falling at our feet

Floating around without hitting the four corners
puddle jumpers splash...with delight
and there is nothing as soothing
as the tapping sound of water
as it taps, taps, taps on a tin can
with the ambiance of tar and paper
peeling back the layered years

It is the soothing sound of a revolution

Umbrella Of The 2nd Amendment

It all seems very
inconsequential
relevant to only a few
in the moment
perception wrapped
in a bloody cloth
carried around
in a shoulder bag
right side of the cause
and you will weep
for your neighbor
kiss the ground
you stand on
thankful your home
remains in tact
people in glass houses
shouldn't throw stones
stray bullets with an agenda
manifesto magnifico
wont change your mind
one dimensional devotee
in the name of all that is divine
father, son, and holy ghost
while Mother Mary works
her magic in disguise
old school way of thinking
solid, stead fast and free
but when the winds shift
a quick turning of the tide
and you find yourself
kneeling at the feet
of the forgiven
soulful and sanctimonious
your child's heart pounding
hands trembling
looking deep into
innocent eyes
pupils dilated clear and wide
do you whisper softly
I promise everything will be OK
I promise everything will be fine
we are protected and gun dependent
under the umbrella of the 2nd amendment?

Metal And Flesh

You don't have to say anything
Choices made set in stone
sometimes silence is golden
sometimes silence speaks volumes
Sit tight in your plastic palace
higher than a kite flies up
and above all the trash talk
Bobble headed shift and shuffle shakers
who could care more or less
Another gun goes off
mind to hand
finger on the trigger
automatic reaction
pull it back
set the world on fire
Bullet set free
sonic boom discharge
penetrating time and space
piercing flesh and bone
Blood pumps adrenalin high
heart beat
heart beat
heart heart beat heart beat heart
...beat skip and jump
heart stop
...heart
...heart
Metal and flesh
melt into eternity
a long dark shallow grave
Linger in the midst of dust and ash
Linger in the scent of death
Another gun goes off
mind to hand
automatic reaction
finger on the trigger
Bullet set free sonic boom discharge
penetrating time and space
piercing flesh and bone
Blood pumps adrenalin high
heart beat
heart beat
heart heart
beat heart
beat heart...heart beat...heart be...heart b...heart...__________________

The Ugly Truth My Beauty

Slightest turn of the other cheek
one side acknowledges the other
in the midst of tragedy
And as we parade into a house of worship
wearing our Sunday best,
sirens blare in the distance
A police presence is felt
and it is comforting at times
Different from the tender touch
of a lovers hand leading the way
to a safer place of ease,
a safer place to breathe
Yet protection of faith and pride
have become the newest
of our human natural instinct;
autopilot kicking in as if innate
The strong protect
The weak are humbled
...and the Ugly Truth My Beauty is;
even those wearing a crown
embodiment of a hierarchy,
or those in a position of power
carry a gun protective shield,
can have a poisonous lethal bite
And as we submit to all we hold
with the highest of regard,
all the traditions passed
from one generation to the next
do not always stand the test of a truthful time
The flag can fly high fluttering in a summer's breeze,
and placating words may gently fall
from the lips of bigots and racists in disguise
without questionable intent
The local media will snap the money shot;
front page news and sales begin to rise
But, in the shadows waiting patiently
for the show to come to a close,
a slow ride down a dirt road,
no stars and no stripes,
no sense of humility or praise,
the seeds of hatred will continue to grow...

Cried A Little

He said he knew
and he finally understood
it was as if a light bulb
went off
a flash of knowledge
and he cried just a little
from the sudden escape
of air that surrounded him
he closed his eyes
and cried just a little
when the knowledge
poured into him
...because he knew
he would never
except
being a black man
in America
if it meant
he would never
be number one
and as they tried
to rise above him
cuffed his hands
behind his back
his defenses went up
and his guard
went down
- and he cried
just a little
as they pushed his face
into the ground
but he knew
and he finally understood
it was as if a light bulb
went off
a flash of knowledge
- and he cried
just a little
as he raised
his head
eyes wide
filled with compassion
filled with pride
because he knew
he had truly won...

In The Hands Of The Misinformed

Illuminating
star bursts
shattered glass
piercing
penetration
shock
your system
set back
sound crackling
bolt of lightening
never
- strikes twice
never
- strikes twice
same place
same time
wind blows
dust circles
whipped into
a frieze
there's no place
- like home
there's no place
- like home
lost track
of ones
own self
humanity
falls
to the right
he picks up
a gun
instead of
using his words
his fist flies
into thin air
missing
- its mark
missing
- the point
of no return
not unlike
a bullet
...in the hands of the misinformed

Death Of A Female Poet

Slipping away
Into a sweet space
Reverie peace maker
Holds my hand
Feather bed comfort
Safe haven soothsayer
Fluffy white pillows
Lavender and lace
Lulling me into
A deep sleep
Dreams in sepia
Hints of color
- and a spray
Of black and white
Vintage montage
In the powerful Atlantic air
I am standing high above
Second floor balcony
Overlooking the Saugatuck River
Noon sun burning in the sky
Letting it all in with eyes shut
A better way to see
All the magical images
Encompassing me
- and off in the distance
Someone is picking up
A loaded gun, taking aim
- and shooting at me
1st shot center 3rd eye
2nd shot left of the heart
Pulsating blood beat
Words entwined
No rhythm no rhyme
Words suspended
There is no sense of time
- and as the light
Begins to shift and fade
I feel everything
A rush of sweetness
- and surrender
A loss of fear
A loss of rage
- and as the high tide
Murky Saugatuck waters
Begin to flow over me
Pushing beyond
The eternal waves
Floating into a deep grey sea
The Long Island Sound
Is singing my name
- and welcoming me...Woman Of The Page

Light and Dark

Light and Dark

(from Windows Of The World 2001, by T. Yates) Complete Piece

Heart aches uncontrollably
I feel very lost
So much of what we knew is in rubble
People pass by with hollow eyes –
They shudder too often without warning
I flinch and hold my breath when an airplane fly’s overhead
Sirens scream and recreate that ghastly moment –
Flashbacks and denial walk hand in hand as if familiar lovers
How does one get beyond such a monumental tear?
The sound of an intentional ripping is heard in every corner of this city
Where is the dark and light, the tall and short of it all?
We always played in the shadows – light and dark, our comrades
Now we have nothing to depend on, except uncertainty

To my left is a firehouse
My eyes overflow
I don’t hide my sadness
The candles flicker in the dark
Illuminating the stars and stripes
Our brothers, our sisters, their pictures –
Images of life gone by, while others remain
Leaving powerful love notes taped to the windows
Begging their God to be kinder next time around

A priest passed by me
With the arms of the firefighters
Carrying his presence to the alter
His head fell in an amazingly peaceful pose
His face gentle and calm
A hallow of dust floated around his head like a sorrowful crown
His Rosary still in hand
Angel’s wings in full flutter guiding the soldier
Taking him home

A few months later...

Some of the babies have been born
Bitter sweet rejoices are heard around the world
As cries of innocence take their first hard gasp of breath
The child cries in all of us as it did when the band stopped
Playing our favorite songs in 1993
The songs repeat and fade in our minds - twirl and dance
In our desperation, we instinctively and frantically
Reach out to hold the tune close
As it slips away again in 2001
Our hands linger in mid air for endless moments
Questioning continually questioning...

It’s our dance
Our two-step
The footings never change –
The dark and light of it will lead the way
We will faithfully follow
The blind leading the blind
We will listen as the mute speak for the deaf
The lame take their first steps

Our eyes could have been eternally shut
Voices never spoken
Our cries never heard
We could have crawled on our bellies
Out from under the rubble…
We were carried, we walked
We helped one another
We stood in the choking cloud of destruction
And came to meet the dark
Face to unknown face
Walking in the direction of the beaming light

A beacon in the mist
Of our own clouded memories
Instantly became clear
As if a God had reached out
And sent all of us the same map –
Directions to a brighter future
All accepting unconditionally without question
The sheep being led to greener pastures
We walk with our hearts pinned to our sleeve
And share a battered sense of unity...
