Push The Beat

Oh man, man its a drop the straw from your mouth
head shaking spasm flash back to a past better left alone - moment
But anyway, remember, do you remember when I fell in love
and you didn't know what to do so you fell on your sword
- it only took that first drop of blood like a sign from the heavens above
that I was already in love with love and maybe not so much with you
And it really never made sense but felt damn good at the time
Right or wrong no one truly knows and yeah, I still don't sleep at night

You were like a kid in a candy shop; me, well I was the femme fatale
wearing dark glasses, the shop keeper in a magic cape
flying around throwing spells and fairy dust;
and when I turned the corner to take a deep introspective breath
you were stealing the baked goods and inventory
- my heart shattered on the floor like splintered glass
from a treasured past commonality you and me

So now when you want to share and reminisce; sing songs from the past
you should remember I like to slow things down and push the beat to a grind
Juke box four songs for a dime at least that's how I remember it, so...

Your arms felt good around my waist and if I close my eyes
dim the lights I can recall how it felt with my fingers
gently entwined through the strands your hair
and you would pull me close and take what little I had left
We laughed late into the night and never locked the doors

When you would leave I'd watch from the back seat
swearing that would be the last time and cursing the stars
as they fell from the sky for their brilliance and yours
...until you would throw stones at my window; revved up again

Could have been a jump start from story book romance cheap novels
bought and sold at Perry's Five and Dime other side of the track
and your fascination with folded pages in your father's Playboy mag
hidden in the laundry basket secret sleuth nothings lost
when you're on the prowl

So now when you want to share and reminisce; sing songs from the past
you should remember I like to slow things down and push the beat to a grind
Juke box four songs for a dime at least that's how I remember it, so...

Depression

Shades drawn closed
darkness blankets
every corner of the room
shadows become one
flattened and obscure
off in the distance
are muted sounds
a whistling tea pot
hopefully someone
will attend to its needs
wrapped gingerly within
solitary seclusion and doubt
...insecurity has become
a knife held to my throat
by my own hand
widow's lasting garb
fits like a second skin
forming tightly around
my waist and chest
heart beats out of necessity
blood flows like an encore
I hide within the day to day
smiles and conversation
secretly counting the seconds
to when I might feel
somewhat alive again
it comes and goes
velvet waves washing over
and a twisting churning knot
tightens in my chest
familiar hand reaching deep
fingers entwined
a death grip crippling
sleep comes a timely relief
if only temporary
ghosts and dream screams
flutter quietly about
softly stroking my cheek
cold and damp to touch
until I rise and begin again
praying for resolve and relief

Carrying Our Secrets

It's just a round-about way
of saying nothing with meaning
...or true intent vibrate
In the distance I can hear the song
There is a dullness in the roar,
and when the dust is kicked up
and no one settles in,
bullets will be a blazing - glory
It really won't matter what pocket
you carry your version of Jesus in
Left or right handed manipulator
fly's solo wing span reaches out
and grabs the core of your heart;
grabs you deep until there isn't
anything left to sink your fingers into
And the teacup you hold
so poetically drops to the floor
tiny splinters of perfection
splash across glistening translucent tile
Rolling thunder drifts out and off the shore;
far, far away and dissipates into an abyss
of all that was kept on the down low
When truth and deception were
as close as Siamese twins
attached by the purity of their genitals
A symbolic way to keep the other honest
keeping the faith and straight forward thinking
What remains to be seen or felt
when the lid is slowly lifted off the cardboard box
perforated illusion creases rippling score
from Heaven and Hell releases all the pain
and a self serving glory - to its own demise
And the Angel's wings will flutter compulsively
and fly against the destruction of ancient lore,
while seductive smoke and fiery cinder carrying our secrets
out to the depths of a cold and everlasting sea

Mother Nature Is Kind

Tree branches bend
and shuffle
an old soft shoe
saw dust on the floor scat
to the seductive blow
of the wind
the strength and force
of Mother Nature
the female mother
Queen of Rag
Queen Bee
stings like a bitch
stings with venom
and a cure to sooth
the wretched soul
a force to reckon with
a force female in nature
female unshakable force
softness rests around her eyes
the creases are love and light
not to be mistaken
for innocence or naivete
but a genuine openness
warmth to touch
to settle into
to rest in arms and heart
wide accepting unquestionable devotion
no time for judgement
no time to put salt in the wound
no time to wound the wounded

The tree branches bend
and shuffle
old soft shoe
saw dust on the floor scat
to the seductive blow
of the wind
- Mother Nature is kind.

Sail Away With Me

Waves caress port side
leaning to the left
filling the sails

with a new
direction
unknown
last breath
secrets from the other side –

Whispering angels
hovering above
- let him exhale one more time…
But I know prayers

are rarely answered
and coincidences
never ring true
And songs blow by
haunting tunes

of love and sorrow
I hear it in the wind
“…sail away with me honey, hold my heart in your hands, sail away with me honey, sail away with me now…”

Burn Out Blues And Bust

Organic moon light heart pounding brilliance
bursting from the seams
slipping from the sidewalls of a passion pit
Fumbling for the remote control
flip the switch from brilliance to boredom...
And some where out there is the second coming
of my redemption
The second coming of a new day
with promise and intention
Lasting longer than a flash in the pan
lime light first blush of love
Smiling from ear to ear Cheshire cat grin
that gives nothing away
But a clear image of a pure ecstatic inner
love lust glow

Because I know some things
are worth waiting for
even if the odds are in favor
of burn out blues and bust

But I'm a romantic at heart
bleeding from old wounds
and the side effects of too many
sleepless nights
Wandering around my apartment as if
the secret to a loving life
is hidden in the slow pace of walking
from room to room
The creek in the floorboard is a sure sign
I'm not alone
That a brighter day awaits right outside my door

Because I know some things
are worth waiting for
even if the odds are in favor
of burn out blues and bust

Metal And Flesh

You don't have to say anything
Choices made set in stone
sometimes silence is golden
sometimes silence speaks volumes
Sit tight in your plastic palace
higher than a kite flies up
and above all the trash talk
Bobble headed shift and shuffle shakers
who could care more or less
Another gun goes off
mind to hand
finger on the trigger
automatic reaction
pull it back
set the world on fire
Bullet set free
sonic boom discharge
penetrating time and space
piercing flesh and bone
Blood pumps adrenalin high
heart beat
heart beat
heart heart beat heart beat heart
...beat skip and jump
heart stop
...heart
...heart
Metal and flesh
melt into eternity
a long dark shallow grave
Linger in the midst of dust and ash
Linger in the scent of death
Another gun goes off
mind to hand
automatic reaction
finger on the trigger
Bullet set free sonic boom discharge
penetrating time and space
piercing flesh and bone
Blood pumps adrenalin high
heart beat
heart beat
heart heart
beat heart
beat heart...heart beat...heart be...heart b...heart...__________________

Dance Away My Fears

The past seeps into some kind
of abstract perspective
My own different from yours - I am sure
My spin, my angle from where I sleep
never falls short of illusive
Yours, off in the distant fog - sails full
wind blows coast to coast,
shore to shore drop off
You catch sea foam in you hands
and playfully toss it into the air
I wonder if you will
remain so beautiful - in the afterlife
Tear stained face, eyes covered in shades
- to keep out the light
Death comes in with a brute force;
an awakening of sorts - I suppose
It's the alarm clock of life,
ticking by waking us up to another day;
while visuals flash between
the mind and daydreams
of a past that needs to be
- reckoned with
And all we have is where we stand
right here and in the now
Feet planted firmly in the sand
forever changing
foot prints slip away
beyond the reef
and into the deep blue sea
The past has a hold of my heart
and I can't seem to set it free
Yesterday is incomplete...so sublime
and if I could do one more thing
If I could go back in time
...step out and rewind
It would be to linger
with you standing in the waves
I would tell you
all the things you
ever wanted to know
Say all the things
you needed me to say
…if I had just one more day
What if I held out my hand
and you never let go
Would the Angels come
between us and tare us apart
So I will try not to cry
for you sweet darlin
I'll try not to shed another tear
and I promise to walk along the shoreline
and dance away all my fears
...dance away my fears

Time Together

I recall those dreams you had
the way they put a smile on your face;
the way life used to take you by storm

...but never caught you off guard
Now and then I come to terms
with all that we once had
and all that we could not hold onto

As hard as we tried it slipped away
like the wind in a storm that passes
without intention or direction...
Once you held my heart in your hand
said all the right words,
all that I wanted to hear;
and you meant every single

sweet word and hushed moments
But we didn’t know
what was around the next turn
so we never looked ahead
...and that’s not a short coming,
only life and how one lives;
we lived so close to the perimeter

You could feel the razors edge
cutting into your skin
like a knife to the heart
and nothing would be left
when all was said and done

Now you have moved
to another space in time
where angel’s songs ring in my ears
And I’ll stand on the cliff of our time together
and never forget you - I will never forget you...

Distant Drummer

Tiny pearls of wisdom
worn like a thorny crown
fall delicately

and lay in contrast
against tanned skin
of a woman's breast;
who once held
a passion for love
in the palm of her hand

As a sea breeze
dances around her,
her precious soul floats
along the widows walk
without intent

Subtleties of a moment
captured like

a ship in a bottle;
slight slip of sand
beneath her bare feet
Yet, she can still hear
the music in the wind
as it carries her heart
to that distant drummer
and hope is always there,

always on the up beat…

Beyond The Fog

Early morning light peers through tiny cracks like a private eye - subtle surveillance
Between nightmares and day-dreams there is a harsh sense that shoots across the sky
As reality focuses on the blurred vision of weary eyes and the only time line has spanned the universe
A love that lives in another sphere…what is there after you?
The question lay still and the answers are silent…

For certain, one day follows the next,
the sun will rise and the sun will set…
the tide is high and the tide is low…
the night comes  and the morning goes…

I wake up knowing that there is something more and yet there is no clarity beyond the fog of my own imagination…

Death

So yes, I have hit the wall
- many times
I've reached down
in the darkness and found
the bottom was still
another 100 feet below me
and all I can say
with a hint of ambivalence
"...man what a trip, what a journey..."

And all the introspective chatter
and cliches passing thru the test of time
held with the highest regard phrases
don't hold an ounce of truth
when the light at the end of the tunnel
is a taunting echo of yourself

Self help mumbo jumbo
new age movement
authors and prophets of old
who keep their secrets
closely protected
within their well guarded heart
while all along holding the key
to their own mysteries
...yet to be solved

And the passions rise
when a nerve is struck
over and over again
their truth is well earned
from their own rock bottom
bouncing realizations
when a light bulb moment
goes off the crowd kneels
and we all know it is
just another oxymoron
but enlightens those in the dark
without question none the less

Once again I am
in a free fall
seeing a lot of familiar faces
along the way
- and yet
there is still no comfort
in the masses
and self pity is as destructive
as falling on your own
proverbial sword
- it's all a ploy
a way to make sense
of the inevitable
to maintain the purity of faith
in the smile of excellence
on your face
that it is sincere
and not a reflection
of one foot already planted
firmly in the ground of fear

And that's not for me
I'm just saying man
that is not my way out
my ashes will blow
across the wide open sea
that sweet spot
where land never
reaches the eye
- carried by angels
and when the time is right
they will kiss me off
into the wind I'll float
high above what was
once my reality

And in the distance
a comforting voice
will be heard
whispers of welcome
and a warm hand
will reach out and touch
that one remaining particle
the ultimate human being
...death needs no introduction

Move Through You

I would love
to move through you
To see what you see
To switch it up
without the knowledge
or fallout
Have the ability
to fall madly in love
with you
...with the simplicity
to detach
from that love
with ease
To hold on
so tightly
with a feeling of
"I've just seen God..."
To letting go
with a sense of
"...to close for comfort!"
Take a deep breath
sigh of relieve
Freedom blustering high
No strings
No albatross dangling
like a piece of cheap jewelry
hanging around my neck -
I would love
to move through you
To see what you see
To switch it up
without the knowledge
or fallout
Have the ability
to fall madly in love with you
fall madly in love with you...

Dream On Dream On

Dream on
Dream on and on
He says
Only 27 questions
To answer
And then you
Will know
....how to fall in love
Sitting in a cozy bar
Some place in Brooklyn
The candle light softens
The harsher lines
That have grown
Across the brow
And marionette lines
That make a smile
More of an conscious effort
Than the natural way
Your lips once parted
Corners turned up
Cherub's bow kissable
As the years dance on
Dance on and on
The answers reveal
More than his
Heart's intentions
And yours races
Out of insecurity
Not for lack of lust
Or passion
But more out of
A sense of caution
...these days
To set the fire slowly
Rather than burn in a blaze
Of no regrets and short felt glory
Dream on
Dream on and on
He says
Only 26 questions
Left to answer
And then you
Will know
....how to fall in love

Forgiveness

Too much time
has passed
I've forgotten
the words
to some of the
best songs
I have ever
written
And it is
a damn shame
when the lyrics
and rhythm
dissipate
into the wind
like a fog
or puff
of steamy vapor
A transparent
...never really able to grasp at straw sense of loss
Today feels
more like
a sand storm
than a cold blast
from the arrival
of a premature winter
The wind blows harder
then it used to
Penetrating to the bone
...to the core
A chill reactionary shiver
Head to toe - spinal slip
Or maybe
I've just lost
some of my rough
and tumble exterior
My roll
with the punches
attitude
My high
and mighty air
Protective gear
upgrade overload
maxed out
vinyl covered
faux leather
side stepping boots
And there are issues
that tare at my heart
Yanking the strings
out of my chest
without any
sense of
responsibility
or remorse
Out of tune and off beat
Ear bleeding burn
Praying on all fours
in the background
...back alley
...back bar low-brow
Setting my soul ablaze
Forgiveness
is a learned art
Each step
is outside the realm
of what could
have been
a natural trait
Or simply nurtured
via circumstance...

Hit The Pavement

I'm jumping off a proverbial
Jagged earthbound ledge
A sorrowful morning
Attempting to let it go
A stones throw from everything tangible
Didn't take the time to think it through
And maybe I never intended to
All I can imagine
All I can visualize
Black and white dramatic effect
I'm looking out eyes opened wide
Looking out beyond the beauty
Of a turbulent and tragic sea
My arms out stretched
With the wing span of an Angel
In a free fall flight
Earth below and heaven above
If I can only fly high enough
Maybe you would finally realize
There is truly some thing angelic
And something magical about me

Somehow you've gotten under my skin
but you still won't let me in
and I'm going for it anyway
before I hit the pavement

It doesn't make any sense
But than again maybe it shouldn't
Because matters for this
Tentative heart of mine
There seems to be no logic
No rhythm and no rhyme
And it's all good even though
I am feeling off center
And slightly misunderstood
Maybe I'm even running low on time
But I'm stuck in a stale mate
Self imposed and not very wise
Oblivious to consequence or folk lore
Déjà vu sentiment...knowing I have been here before
Such familiarity I can see in your eyes
But there is a dialogue
Playing out in my head
With all the bells and whistles

Somehow you've gotten under my skin
but you still won't let me in
and I'm going for it anyway
before I hit the pavement
I'm going for it anyway
before I hit the pavement...

Temptation

Yes, I let you hold my hand
and I held yours...
- acknowledging a perfect fit
Yes, I let you look into my eyes
I curiously looked into yours...
- I didn't blink or turn away
letting you past the walls of protection
Yes, I let you pull me close to you;
wrap your arms around me
and kiss me passionately
Yes, I reciprocated without hesitation
Yes, a warm wind blew
time stood still
- and yes my heart raced
Yes, I was intrigued, flattered
and slightly bewildered
Yes, all your words rang true
- and yes I am attracted to you
Yes, I have thought about you since
Yes, I have dreamed about you
the moment you leaned in
and took my breath away
...welcoming you with delight
Yes, I have wondered
what it would have been like...
if we had spent the night together
...if only, if only
Yes, I smile at the thought
of our stolen moment
Yes, it seemed you found
what I thought I had lost
- and genuinely returned it
Yes, we connected
Yes, I have no regrets

You might ask me why - my simple reply
"I let you into my head but not my heart darlin..."
And yes I would do it again...

I Cry For You

Walking out knee deep
Fluid reflections glimmer
Walking out shifting sandbar
Low tide is a slow rise
The moon sits stoically
On a fine line drawn
Across the horizon
And I can only imagine
What is beyond the curve
Of this narcissistic planet - Earth
Or the destination of shooting stars
First hand knowledge burn out
Slips beneath my own personal radar
The way love vanishes mysteriously
Into the stillness of a dark night
Or shutters as the light of day
Seeps into creases of awareness
Sudden winds blow like a cold slap
Chilling the hearts of lonely lovers
A harsh realization...bitter sweet
The dance leaves me senseless
Leaves me empty
...I cry for you
East coast rainy Saturday
Music playing in the background
Lyrics that hit home
Lyrics I should have written
Back when life wasn't so convoluted
Flipping from page to page
Familiar visions old photos
Memories open the flood gates
To those no longer here
Outside of this sphere
Loved ones that touched my heart...changed my life
Loved ones and friends interchangeable affections
East coast rainy Saturday
Leaves me empty
...I cry for you

When Wont It Matter

I can be an after thought
a chain reaction glimmer in your eye
hitting the nail on the head...clairvoyant imposter
it doesn't truly matter all that much - to me
What is thought or spoken - love has no boundaries
the exception, not being reciprocated - virtuous whore
Especially when the world around us
is a blaze - flames kissing the heavens
and the middle ground is a jagged edge - diversionary tact
When will you look at me
tears in your eyes - heart pounding
the same way I look at you?
When wont it matter
that my story isn't in-sync - with yours?
I know I carry a different tune
When will you feel the same way
about me - the same way I feel about you?
When wont it matter?
I've traveled my own path - lost at times
but when I came to a fork in the road
I never turned back - choices made
via an unorthodox flip of a coin
or mere chance, the direction of the wind
kiss and blow - roll the dice
heads I win tails you lose - continue on my love
The alternative has its own draw - appearances can be deceiving
just wasn't part of the grand design - my journey
With music pushing me forward, a lyric on the tip of my tongue
my head full of words and soulful thought
always leading me on my merry way
When will you look at me
tears in your eyes - heart pounding
the same way I look at you?
When wont it matter
that my story isn't in-sync - with yours?
I know I carry a different tune
When will you feel the same way
about me - the same way I feel about you?
When wont it matter?

Those Beyond The Age Of Service

I can feel the beat of the drum
that repetitive mesmerizing
all to familiar vibration
that pounds deep in the heart
blood pumping adrenaline rush
of those that can not see beyond
their own insecurities - fears
egos soar high above
with the wing span - symbolic majestic strength
of an eagle - hawk mentality
never questioning the obvious
never questioning the past
- those beyond the age of service

I remember that vibration, that sensation
the lacking of humanity and compassion
that fills the hearts - of some
the puffing up of their chest with fists pounding
words spewing free flowing venom - poison
like the rumbling sound of the earth cracking
splitting down the middle - jagged edges
swallowing the souls of those in search
of salvation and redemption
the sound of those that continue to reject
- those beyond the age of service

I hear the beat of the drum
an all to familiar sound that pounds
louder and louder - each day
and there are no lessons learned
we fall to our knees praying to our particular source of god
we hold our children close - they are all our children
close to our chest hearts pounding - rhythmic surrender
wounds so deeply ingrained - subconscious prejudice
there is no power of prayer or ranting and raving
that will ever set the record straight
that will ever clear the slate
posing the same questions - repetitive prompting
war the only acceptable answer
- for those beyond the age of service
